Pigments Project : Recording Time Through Natural Color

An artist recording nature's changing colors through research and material practice.

I collect color from nature.

For a long time, I believed that my practice was about recording the colors of nature. I observed how color changed with season, light, air, and humidity, and transformed those observations into natural pigments. Over time, however, my understanding of the work began to change. By returning to the same places and observing how pigments continued to change over time, I gradually realized that color was never what I wanted to preserve. What I wanted to record was not color. Color has always been a trace of the time carried by a place. Seasons, climate, growth, decay, light, and air leave their marks through continuous change, and these accumulations become visible as color. Through long observation, I came to understand that color reveals not only how a place looks, but how it exists through time. I no longer think of my practice as collecting color.

I record the time of a place through its color.

Making pigments is not a way of preserving color. It is a way of observing and understanding time. The pigments become an archive of these observations, while painting becomes a place where these accumulated records form new relationships.

My work is not an attempt to represent nature. It is a record of how my way of understanding nature has changed through sustained observation.

자연에서 색을 채집한다.

오랫동안 나는 내 작업이 자연의 색을 기록하는 일이라고 생각했다. 계절과 빛, 공기와 습도에 따라 변화하는 색을 관찰하고, 그 변화를 자연 안료의 형태로 남기는 것이 작업의 목적이라고 믿었다. 그러나 자연을 반복해서 관찰하고, 같은 장소를 다시 찾으며, 안료가 시간 속에서 변해가는 과정을 오래 바라보는 동안 생각은 조금씩 달라졌다. 기록하고 싶었던 것은 색이 아니었다는 걸 깨달았기 때문이다. 색은 한 장소가 지나온 시간을 드러내는 흔적이었다. 계절과 기후, 성장과 소멸, 빛과 공기. 수없이 반복된 변화는 자연의 색 안에 축적되고, 그 색을 통해 비로소 장소의 시간을 읽게 되었다. 그래서 어느덧 나는 색만을 채집한다고 말하지 않는다.

색을 통해 한 장소의 시간을 기록한다.

안료를 만드는 일은 색을 보존하기 위한 기술이 아니라, 시간을 관찰하고 이해하기 위한 연구이다. 축적된 안료는 하나의 색채 아카이브가 되고, 회화는 그 기록들이 새로운 관계를 맺는 장소가 된다.

내 작업은 자연을 재현하는 일이 아니라, 자연을 오래 관찰하는 동안 자연을 이해하는 방식이 어떻게 변해왔는지를 기록하는 일이다.
